Our Mission
The Middlebury Student Investment Committee (SIC) is dedicated to the prudent management of a portion of Middlebury College's endowment while providing students with a hands-on educational experience in investment management.
Our primary objectives are:
- Preserve and grow capital for Middlebury College through disciplined investment decisions
- Provide members with practical experience in financial analysis and portfolio management
- Foster a collaborative learning environment where students can develop investment skills
- Prepare members for careers in finance and related fields
We strive to outperform our benchmarks through rigorous research, thoughtful analysis, and a long-term investment horizon.
Our Structure
Organization
The Middlebury SIC is organized into seven sector teams, each focused on researching and analyzing companies within their designated sectors:
- Technology, Media and Telecommunications: Software, hardware, semiconductors, IT services, media, telecom
- Healthcare: Pharmaceuticals, medical devices, healthcare services
- Financials: Banks, insurance, asset management
- Consumer and Retail: Retail, apparel, restaurants, consumer goods
- Industrials: Manufacturing, transportation, aerospace
- Natural Resources: Oil and gas, mining, chemicals
- Real Estate, Gaming, and Lodging: Real estate services, Hotels, Casinos, Real estate asset managers
Each sector team is led by a Sector Head who coordinates research efforts and presents investment opportunities to the entire committee.
Governance
The Executive Committee provides leadership and direction for the organization:
- Chair: Oversees all committee operations and serves as the primary liaison with college administration
- Chief Investment Officer: Directs investment strategy and portfolio management
- Chief Operating Officer: Manages internal processes, recruitment, and training
- Chief Administrative Officer: Coordinates meetings, alumni engagement, and industry connections
- Portfolio Managers: Lead research and analysis for their respective sectors
- Senior Analysts: Assisting portfolio managers with key deliverables through synthesis of research
The committee meets weekly to discuss market developments, review investment proposals, and make allocation decisions. Investment proposals require a majority vote from all members to be implemented.
